Job Description
Under the general supervision of the Field Services Coordinator, the Environmental Compliance Officer 1 is responsible for field sampling activities and analysis, installing automated sampling equipment, monitoring hauled wastewater deliveries, and other regulatory activities assigned under the Departments Sewer By-law monitoring and enforcement programs.
As the Environmental Compliance Officer 1 , you will:
- Collect samples from businesses in the Sewered Overstrength Monitoring program.
- Perform field analysis including quality control requirements to confirm compliance with by-law requirements.
- Monitor Hauled Wastewater facilities for regulatory compliance.
- Perform other activities that support the Branch’s enforcement programs.
- Perform other duties consistent with the classification, as assigned.
Your education and qualifications include:
- Complete High School Grade 12/G.E.D. or equivalent combination of education and experience.
- Diploma or Degree from a recognized university/college program in Science, Environmental Science or Environmental Technology. Education must include courses relevant to the position (sample collection, basic chemistry and chemical analytical techniques, environmental monitoring and legislation).
- Minimum of one-year prior related work experience.
- Demonstrated ability to communicate effectively both verbally and in writing regarding investigation and enforcement activities.
- Knowledge of sampling techniques, documentation, legal sampling guidelines, and field analysis techniques.
- Knowledge of occupational hazards and the safety precautions and regulations applicable to the positions area of work.
- Ability to make basic chemical and statistical calculations.
- Demonstrated ability to follow safety regulations and safe work procedures.
- Demonstrated ability to establish and maintain positive working relationships with employees at all levels of the organization, external contacts and the public, in accordance with the Respectful Workplace Standard.
- Ability to understand and execute verbal and written instructions.
- Demonstrated organizational, problem solving and decision-making skills.
- Ability to use a computer for data entry, tabulation and retrieval using Branch, Divisional or other computer information systems, including Office365 applications.
- Courses in database management, statistics, and industrial waste treatment are preferred.
- IMPORTANT : Applicants who have been educated outside of Canada must have education which is comparable to the minimum qualification in Canada. Applicants submitting foreign credentials require an official academic assessment report issued by a recognized Canadian assessment service at application.
Conditions of employment:
- The successful candidate must maintain legal eligibility to work in Canada. If the successful candidate possesses a work permit, it is their responsibility to ensure the permit remains valid.
- A Police Information Check satisfactory to the employer will be required from the successful candidate, at their expense.
- Must possess and maintain a valid Manitoba Class 5 Driver’s Licence. The successful applicant will be required to provide a Notice of Driver’s Licence In Force document upon request.
- Must be able to receive/maintain appointment as a Special Constable (within 3-6 months).
- Physically capable of performing all the duties of the position such as lifting and installing sampling equipment (50 lbs) and have the ability and willingness to work outside for extended periods often under unfavourable weather conditions as required by work assignments.
